You sure know a lot about mushrooms, Marnie.
Father taught me when I was little. I once brought home three bags full of mushrooms. You should’ve seen the look on my mother’s face!
sometimes sad, always rad

What is this holy shit
its called When Marnie was there, its really good.
Why
holy shit okay this is, again, people applying western race relations to other countries and i will not have it
japan is notorious, absolutely notorious for fetishizing and being outright racist when it comes to stereotypes and other races. if you live in japan or you’ve ever experienced what it’s like to be a non-japanese person in japan,
japan is not the united states. the race dynamics are incredibly different. there are plenty of restaurants and businesses which have the sign ‘japanese only’ brazenly hung outside their walls. if you’re korean in japan? good fucking luck taking on the immense amount of racism that both the government and the general populace will hurl your way. there are third generation korean kids, who for three generations have had their families live in japan, who do not have japanese citizen ship purely based on the fact they have korean blood in them.
black people? a joke too. in japan they’re all buff, they’re all angry, and there is little presented to the country outside of outrageous stereotypes.
white people? you’re ignorant or you’re all idiots. that’s the truth, and it starts to deviate once you get into country by country. americans are all loud and fat and ignorant. british people are all upper class or fucking royalty of some kind.
so yes, it is offense. it’s offensive to not ‘white people’ in america, it’s offensive to the white demographic of japan, who funnily enough, don’t benefit from white privilege in a country in which they are not the ones on top of the ruling power structure.
i’m so sick and tired of westerners applying their racial dynamics to countries that have nothing to fucking do with them.
what’s even worse is white bloggers reblogging this going ‘oooh lmao’ about a country that has nothing to do with their racial politics in an attempt to seem more open-minded, which has the opposite effect when you’re basically imprinting your own views and your own country’s status on to another country’s. but i guess colonialism is dead, right?
not everywhere is america for fuck’s sake
34k+ and I really doubt most or even a good number of them are this version

Ariana Miyamoto was crowned Miss Japan 2015 this past March
At 20 years old, not only is Ariana Japan’s first and only half Japanese contestant to claim the title, beating out her more “Japanese looking” peers, but Miyamoto will also go on to represent Japan at the Miss Universe pageant later this year.

The sign reads “I am me.”
Ariana was born to an African American father and a Japanese mother, and spent most of her life growing up in the port city of Nagasaki. She speaks fluent Japanese and English.
In the articles that I’ve read about her she mentions how she was always verbally abused by other kids because of her race. Being half black she was the target for racial slurs and other mistreatment by her own peers. But to her she is 100% Japanese, and having the opportunity to represent her country is something that she is glad to have.

Represent.
she is so beautiful
Seriously

Hafu account for a small portion of Japan’s population. According to Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, approximately 36,000 children with a non-Japanese parent are born every year in the country, accounting for about 3 percent of births.
People were calling her the japanese equivalent of the n word yet japan is obsessed with black culture and looking as black as possible…amazing
Non-black people want black culture without black people attached to it.
I’ve reblogged the video already but these two comments above me are really important– you cannot deny that anti-blackness is a global concept when everyone has a negative word/name for black people… But yeah go ahead and wear our clothes and sing our songs and do our dances, ye?
And as someone who is half black and half japanese who was born and raised in japan, there would be derogatory things being said about a half white person winning the title as well. As a matter of fact, there would be a bigger blacklash if someone who was half malasian, filipino, or any south east asian. With racial dynamics in japan, it’s a lot more complicated than just anti-blackness when japanese tend to be anti-non-japanese in differing degrees to different nationalities.
Any other haafus please correct me if you think I’m wrong solacekames brofligate kokoonjin itsmendokusai softsoundingseas etc
I’m not even stepping into this until I was specifically called and in order to back up fraulein-jules and bluehaafu, who are black. But as someone half-white with a Japanese citizen father who spent part of my early life in Japan, I can agree.
Half-white Japanese in Japan do well in some fields if they have a certain look, because global white privilege is huge and real in Japan, and linked with colorism, especially for women. It’s not as important for men to be pale, but it’s very important for women. But half-white Japanese still face prejudice, especially if they don’t have that look. They’re not looked at as white nor as “fully Japanese” by many Japanese. Even full ethnic Japanese who grew up outside Japan face prejudice for not being fully Japanese. Japan has a fairly unique situation with diaspora where a lot of the people who left Japan in the early 20th century ended up in poorer countries than Japan became.
African-Americans face anti-blackness and colorism in Japan (which is also global and I’m not denying it in any way) but because it takes a slightly different form in Japan, Black Americans are treated better than Black Africans, to the point where Africans desperate for better treatment will fake being American. I’ve noticed this myself and have also read Black bloggers in Japan talking about it.
American military personnel stationed in Okinawa of whatever race including Asian have privileges over Japanese and Okinawan locals (they’re an occupying force) and often abuse those privileges heavily.
Koreans are… you know what, it’s too complicated. I’m probably going to get a lot of shit for writing this whole thing up and I’m not even going to go there, other than that we have a close but very troubled relationship, and many Korean-Japanese are treated incredibly poorly, and are the main targets of Japanese fascists. Not black people, definitely not white people. Korean-Japanese.
SE Asians are often very discriminated against, stereotyped as poor, subject to colorism, exactly like fraulein-jules says. If Miss Universe was part Malaysian or part Filipina and darker-skinned, she’d also be in for a world of hurt.
I hate having to say this over and over again but here it is in short form:
I’m staying out of commentary about Miyamoto other than to say I’m proud of her, even though I’m not into beauty pageants and don’t follow them. When she talks about her experience as a Japanese woman, I hope people will actively listen, instead of using her as a bargaining chip to prove that Japanese are incredibly racist or aren’t incredibly racist.
Yup, this has been my experience with my Japanese side of the family as well. Especially when it comes to Koreans. My Japanese grandparents had Korean tenants living in their rental properties and on PURPOSE they would call them and refer to them in the derogatory term “Chosen-jin” instead of using “Kankoku-jin” just to show their disdain. Meanwhile, they had no problem with American blacks but really didn’t care for Africans.
So unless a person is aware of the intricacies of racial dynamics in Japan, and it takes more than a few months as an exchange student or a mere vacation, you shouldn’t really comment on it.
